Does Chocolate Cause Acne?
The question has been in circulation
lately if chocolate causes acne. Acne
is a type of skin irritation that causes pimples and whitehead (Acne Grades and Types with possible treatment). Many measures have been used to treat acne like salt and toothpaste. If I want to go
straight to the point not all chocolate causes acne. "Chocolate per
se will not make you break out," says Dr. Shamban. "In fact, there is
little evidence that chocolate or any specific fatty foods will cause acne, but
we do know that a high-sugar/high-fat diet can increase sebum production and
promote inflammatory responses in the body -- which can lead to acne. Different
Chocolate has different recipes and ingredients. Even the breakout depends on
the ingredient contained in the chocolate. We have two major kinds of chocolate. These
are the white chocolate and the dark chocolate. Now to the answer of the
question which is if chocolate cause acne, we should look into both types.

Does
White chocolate cause acne?
"Milk and white chocolate overall
have more dairy, sugar and other additives than dark chocolate.”For some
people, dairy and sugary substances can trigger hormonal changes, which in turn
may cause inflammation, especially for acne-prone people.
Does dark chocolate
cause acne?
Dark chocolate can trigger breakouts
if you have acne; however, acne triggers vary from person to person. Dark
chocolate also contains ingredients that are implicated in acne breakouts, such
as sugar and fat. It is also well-documented that dark chocolate has many
benefits to our health, not just for our cardiovascular system but for our skin
as well. The high cocoa content of dark chocolate also means high amounts oftwo flavonoids, catechin and procyanidin, which are chemicals that act as
antioxidants within the body. Antioxidants protect the body's cells against
free radicals. You can read Chocolate for health, why the darker is better.
So if chocolate can't be directly
pinned to breakouts but definitely falls into the high-sugar/high-fat category,
are certain types (dark, milk, white) better or worse for you?
The only thing I will advice is
that you should reduce the amount of chocolate you eat if you are fond of
eating too much of chocolate. Too much of anything can be bad.
